On the night of 4 to 5 March 2025, what the monks had long feared came true. The Phuktal Monastery was hit by a heavy rockfall. A massive rockfall damaged large parts of the monastery complex - especially the central prayer room, where ceremonies, prayers and rituals take place.
On 8 March, many stones fell again. The toilets are now unusable and the monks no longer have access to their storeroom.
The destruction is enormous. Fortunately, no monks or visitors were injured.
The large prayer room, the spiritual centre of the monastery, was completely destroyed. This room was not only a place of prayer, but also a place of community, deeply rooted in the centuries-old tradition of the monastery. For the monks and the faithful, the loss is not only material, but also emotionally hard to grasp.
The recent rockfalls show that urgent rock stabilisation measures are needed to prevent further disasters. Without protective measures, the monastery remains at risk and there is a danger of further collapses.
The Phuktal Monastery is appealing for donations to enable the reconstruction of the destroyed prayer room and to initiate the urgently needed safety measures. Any support - large or small - will help to preserve this spiritual jewel in the Himalayas and help the monks and the local community.
Anyone who wants to help can make a contribution here.
Let's not let this historic monastery down! Every donation counts.
