A wool centre for the Tibetan nomads in Yushu

ThiSince the devastating earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai province, in April 2010, the idea of a meaningful aid project for that region and for the suffering population in Tibet in general has been growing. The reconstruction aid for the urban earthquake victims was provided by the Chinese. However, the nomads in the neighbouring regions still receive no support. In addition, their independent way of life and thus their existence and tradition are jeopardised. Our organisation aims to promote self-sufficiency, especially among nomads in the earthquake region. The association's board is made up of a group of committed women, Tibetans and Swiss, who work on a voluntary basis to improve living conditions in Tibet.

Von Schur bis zum Endprodukt

A wool centre was set up in 2012, which takes the shearing from the nomads at fair prices. The centre also provides the necessary infrastructure to process the animal wool into a woven product. This task is carried out by the nomadic women after a one-year training and familiarisation period. The aim is to sell the high-quality end products regionally - and, if successful, beyond the region. The proceeds from the sale of the finished products contribute to improving the livelihoods of the young nomads, such as health, hygiene, animal husbandry and education. In this way, their tradition is also maintained.
